Meet Lizzie

What do Boy George, Belinda Carlisle, Pee Wee Ellis and Mica Paris have in common, apart from being musical icons, that is? They have all performed alongside the deeply soulful and ever-so-lovely Lizzie Deane, who leads The Collaboration Choir in Bedford, Woburn Sands and Milton Keynes. Though she has performed with a glittering array of stars and graced the legendary Glastonbury stage, Lizzie remains refreshingly down-to-earth. With a huge passion for ‘passing on the music’, she enjoys sharing her infectious love of singing, believing that a fun, nurturing approach helps choir members to thrive. Seeing friendships flourish and members grow in confidence are amongst her favourite aspects of leading a choir, alongside being able to devise sensational song arrangements! Lizzie, whose voice has been described as a ‘powerful, show-stopping instrument’, grew up in the Midlands immersed in a soundtrack of Etta James, Aretha Franklin, The Jacksons and Stevie Wonder. A born performer, she always bagged the solos at school, and aged 10 slipped on ruby slippers to play Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
Classically trained (but with her heart firmly in soulful funk), Lizzie studied for a BA Honours Music Degree and Advanced Acting Diploma at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. After a short acting career, Lizzie threw herself wholeheartedly into singing, becoming an in-demand session vocalist. For several years, she performed live on stage, TV and radio, touring with the biggest artists of the 80s and working with personal hero, Pee Wee Ellis (JB Horns), credited with writing the first funk tune, Cold Sweat! Realising that she had an exceptional talent for teaching, Lizzie began leading choirs in 2015, as well as offering vocal coaching. Never losing her desire to perform, she continues to step into the limelight, singing with her group, The Lizzie Deane band, and top a capella ensembles, Vocally Bespoke and Get Gospel. She’s also been known to belt out Chaka Khan’s signature groove, Ain’t Nobody, in the shower, and once unwittingly serenaded a stranger whilst breaking out into a rousing rendition of Bach in a chapel at Oxford University! Having worked alongside The Collaboration Choir’s founder Carrie, it was a no brainer when Lizzie was asked to join the joyful singing squad. “Carrie is such a wonderful ball of energy; funny, driven and creative,” says Lizzie. “She has a vision and will always make it happen and that’s what I love about her.” A mum to an awesome eight-year-old boy, Lizzie possesses a genuine caring quality (plus a zany comedic side) which keeps her 200-plus members in good spirits. “I think members think Carrie and I are a bit bonkers and silly sometimes, but they seem to love it,” she laughs. “I love to see members connect with the music, have fun and rediscover their sense of joy. Choir practice is an hour and a half each week which is just for them, in a safe space where they can absolutely let go!” she enthuses. “I recommend singing to everyone!”
