Meet Luke

Meet Luke Sitaraman, an experienced freelance tenor, composer, and musical director, who is living proof that age is just a number when it comes to a heavyweight musical resume! At just 23, Luke has crammed more musical endeavours into two decades than most manage in a lifetime. An Oxford University graduate with a first-class music degree and a Master’s in musicology, his career spans singing as a Cathedral Lay Clerk, directing top-tier ensembles, and composing film scores. Don’t let the elite credentials fool you though – Luke is all about accessible, joyful, music-making, with an occasional sprinkling of silliness! Leading The Collaboration Choir’s West London branches (East Sheen, Hammersmith, Kew, Putney, Richmond and Wimbledon), Luke is relishing the opportunity to cultivate a thriving ensemble. “The choir seems like a really nice community and I’m very excited to build my version of that in London,” he enthuses. “I really like the accessible teaching style, too.” Raised on a glorious, head-spinning mix of road-trip playlists (oscillating between Katy Perry and Rascal Flatts), Luke’s upbringing took him from New Jersey and Minneapolis to West London, where he settled in 2011.

Having sung throughout primary school, Luke went on to win a scholarship to the West London Free School—renowned for its music program—where he studied everything from choral to pop. Meeting his key collaborators in Oxford’s hallowed halls, Luke sang in the Choir of Queen’s College and ran the music society, hosting infamously packed gigs. “We put on a Back to Black concert with a full horn section in a tiny student basement bar,” Luke recalls. “We crammed so many people in we ended up getting a fire warning!” Luke has performed across the UK and Europe with professional groups ranging from chamber choirs to a cappella groups. He works as an assistant leader for the London Youth Choirs, mentoring the next generation of talent. “A lot of music making we do as professionals is not particularly altruistic so it’s nice to do something more definitively nurturing,” he says. Luke co-founded the innovative music collective Little Kitchen, sings with the ground-breaking vocal ensemble Vox Urbane (representing marginalised voices), and facilitates choirs for Music in Offices – using a proven formula to get even the most self-conscious workers singing. “I just do something silly!” he smiles. “I think if you can find the humour in things, people respond well, especially in a teaching setting.” When he’s not working, Luke can be found rowing on the River Thames or cooking up a hearty bean stew. Given his frenetic schedule, what drew Luke to direct The Collaboration Choir? “The biggest attraction was the charity aspect, especially raising money for Children in Need,” he explains. “I was looking to expand my work as a director and in my part of London, we have quite a few choirs within spitting distance, so I wanted to create a nice little community where we can sing and have fun.” Get set for brilliant energy, zero awkwardness, and a whole lot of great music!
